I have been intrigued since childhood by the language of clothing, and by color, pattern, texture, and how these elements disguise/reveal ourselves, so it made sense for me to pursue an early career in costume design. This training has been the basis for much of the artwork that has followed. I designed costumes for university and professional theatres and for Shakespeare festivals throughout the West. I also had my own theatre company, Music in Motion, a sign language dance troupe, in the 1980s.
For most of my professional career I worked as a linguist. Since retiring in 2006, I have gotten a boost of artistic energy returning to my love of textiles. My current work involves layering, manipulating and embellishing. I dye, quilt, weave, embroider, felt, print, bead, foil - almost any technique which creates or alters a surface. My recent series pursue themes of importance to me such as ancient cave paintings, decay, and the fecundity of pomegranates. And language, of course, is an ever-present subject.
It is a joy to be in my studio and facilitate the work as it unfolds.
